Cloudflare is
one of the leading content delivery networks (CDNs) today. The US firm also
provides distributed denial-of-service (DoS) protection to online domains,
speed optimization and various cyber security services.
The company is responsible
for millions of customers worldwide, including major enterprise firms.
On Tuesday morning, several
websites and online services, including Feedly, Cloudflare, blogs,
cryptocurrency services and more, were suddenly shut down. Ironically, this
also meant that Down Detector – a website used to check the status of another
domain that you are having trouble connecting to – went offline as well.
Considering the scope and
scale of Cloudflare, when the firm's network goes down, the entire internet
feels the impact.
In an update at 7.43 a.m.,
Cloudflare's services team said they are investigating "widespread issues
with our services and/or network." According to the Cloudflare status
page, the Cloudflare API is currently offline.
The company said:
"Users may experience
errors or timeouts accessing Cloudflare's network or services. We will update
this status page to clarify the scope of the impact as we continue to
investigate."
In another update about 30
minutes later, Cloudflare said, "The problem has been identified and a fix
is being implemented."
Cloudflare
said it resolved a "widespread" outage earlier in the day that
affected a large number of services, including FTX, Discord, Omegle, DoorDash,
Crunchyroll, NordVPN and Feedly. The internet infrastructure firm resolved the
issue about an hour after users faced problems accessing some popular sites
including Zerodha, Medium.com, news outlet Register, Grow, Buffer, iSpirt,
Upstox and Social Blade.
The company, which faced a
similar problem in some parts of the world last week, did not reveal what
caused the problem. Earlier today the firm's chief technology officer John
Graham-Cumming said on a Hacker News thread that the outage did not spread
around the world, but affected "a lot of places."
According to DownDetector,
users also indicated that they were struggling to access Coinbase, Shopify and
League of Legends, a crowdsourced web monitoring tool that tracks outages.
Cloudflare describes the
situation as a "severe P0" event—a condition that is loosely
described as an urgent, first-priority problem. In addition, the company said
the incident affected connectivity to Cloudflare's network in "wide areas,"
causing 500 errors.
"The incident affects
all data plane services in our network," the company said.
As of 8.20 a.m., Cloudflare
said a correction has been initiated and "we're monitoring the
results." Service has been restored on some websites and online platforms
that appear to have been taken offline due to a problem with Cloudflare's
network.
As of 9.13am, Cloudflare's
update page now shows that all services are now up.
